Apaches Delivering Hay
Year: 1893
Location: Arizona
Though you may have assumed that the interaction between Native Americans and settlers during the Wild West was violent, this was not always the case. Apaches are carrying hay to pioneers in Arizona at Fort Apache. Apache traded with white settlers and native tribes to obtain what they required. However, instead of trading, certain Apache bands elected to launch raids (which the tribe does not consider an act of war).

“Disreputable” Places, Nevada
Year: 1905
Location: Hazen, Nevada
Hazen, Nevada, was a wild region in the Old West. This image depicts some “disreputable” establishments, including the Shamrock Saloon. Hazen was established in 1903 to accommodate workers on an irrigation project south of town. It swiftly grew, with hotels, churches, schools, saloons, and houses of bad repute dotting its streets. In addition to its unsavory venues, Hazen is well-known for its eerie past, since it became notorious for having an unusually high number of hangings despite its small population size.
