Buffalo Bill, born William Cody, was one of the most well-known entertainers and celebrities from the Old West. Buffalo Bill was a bison hunter, showman, and soldier, and this photo shows him as a young man out hunting. Cody was a famous hunter who earned his reputation after killing around 5,000 bison in eighteen months during the 1860s. He made a lot of money from bison hunting and used the revenues to build Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show in 1883, which spawned an entire genre of Wild West entertainment shows.

Mining was a significant industry in Virginia City, Nevada, where this photograph was taken. Miners are seen exiting the mine after a long day of work, most likely fatigued, dizzy, and hungry. Virginia City was home to mills that ran around the clock, processing ore from the nearby Chollar Mine, which employed many of the town’s inhabitants.
