Children Commute By Cow To School
Year: 1907
Location: Okanogan, Washington
There were no buses to transport students to school in rural Oklahoma in the early 1900s, so these youngsters chose to take the next best thing: their cow. Back then, a cow cost $4.55 to $6.30 per head, so this family was undoubtedly looking to get their money’s worth. This photo was taken in Okanogan, Washington, a city with a current population of 2,373. The city was one of Washington’s final European settlements, and it served as a highway to British Columbia.
