Frank White, the drug lord who rules over New York, is one of Walken’s most recognizable characters, yet he feels that he missed the mark. To Total Film, he said, “It should have been my best work, but I [messed] up. I’ve only seen the film twice and I felt I didn’t give Frank enough complexity and perspective.” He added, “I wish I had another chance to play him because I would have completely altered my performance.”

In The Deer Hunter, Walken played emotionally and physically damaged Vietnam veteran Nick Chevotarevich, earning him the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. He apparently went over and above to acquire his gaunt, weary appearance in the film’s last act, subsisting for a week on nothing but water, rice, and bananas. In this instance, the physical effort paid off.
