Midland, Texas Sandstorm
Year: 1894
Location: Midland, Texas
This creepy snapshot depicts an issue that many people in the West had to contend with: sandstorms. The photo was taken near Midland, Texas, and shows a wall of sand poised to encircle the town, with its residents most doubt seeking refuge from the violent winds and blowing particles. Midland was once a major oil town (and it remains an oil industrial center today). Despite the fact that prospectors and businesses paid a lot of money to keep Midland thriving, Mother Nature’s recurrent sandstorms proved too powerful.

The Pony Express
Year: 1860/1861
Location: Western U.S.
Many Americans are familiar with the name Pony Express. This speedy postal service was unique at the time, promising ten-day delivery between Missouri and California. It functioned similarly to FedEx or UPS at the time. The Pony Express delivered letters via a relay of horse riders. It operated from 1860 to 1861, and despite its brief lifespan, it ran its 2,000-mile circuit numerous times before being shut down due to technological developments (such as the invention of the telegraph).
