While she was practicing the sentences she would say to Leo, Alana paced about the living room. She rehearsed her own responses while attempting to maintain a steady tone of voice. She imagined his emotions. With a mental image of his face, she would ask, “How could you?” To obtain the facts, she had to maintain her composure. However, she had a tightness in her gut with each and every session. She dreaded the statement that Leo would make or the implications that it might have for them.

Alana recalled how Leo used to be friendly and open with her while she was lying on the couch. He had been more aloof as of late, and his smiles were forced. Apparently, he had been working more, and he was frequently exhausted as a result. The memories of the times when they had shared everything came flooding back to Alana. Now, she had the impression that she was living with an unknown person. When she referred to this man as her spouse, who was he?
