Chris Taylor, a college student, freely enlists in Vietnam combat duty in 1967, but his idealistic expectations for fighting are quickly dashed once he gets his feet on the ground. Staff Sergeant Barnes and Sergeant Elias’ feud generates schisms among the soldiers under their command, and Chris is quickly confronted with inhumanity, great pain, and man’s duality.

4. Hearts and Minds (1974)

This documentary juxtaposes disturbing, illuminating interviews with military figures with visuals of horrendous murder and brutality in Vietnam, with its title based on a phrase by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The use of Johnson’s phrase in the film is meant to be sarcastic in light of the fact that Johnson said that victory in Vietnam will be determined by the “hearts and minds of the people who actually live out there.”
