“Hello, auntie,” Sophie began, sounding almost entirely foreign in her hoarse voice. It sounded like a certain accent was the cause of it, therefore it was definitely not the voice they remembered. Francesca didn’t care, though, as long as she could have her niece in her arms again. She had no idea that this was just the beginning of the most intense emotional experience she had ever had.

Sophie opened her mouth to speak, but her accented and jumbled words were nothing like the crisp English she had spoken before. Grandfather and Francesca listened carefully, attempting to put her broken sentences back together. “I… forest… long time,” was the best Sophie could come up with. Her English had failed her, forgotten over the years, but her eyes betrayed a longing to be understood.
